En af de sager, der har fået sindene i kog i både Kina og USA, er amerikanernes beslutning om at sende våben til Taiwan. Den kinesiske viceudenrigsminister He Yafei erklærer ifølge CRI, at beslutningen ”er et groft indgreb i Kinas indre anliggender.” For at vise sin utilfredshed, har Kina lagt alt militært samarbejde med USA på is og truet med sanktioner imod de amerikanske virksomheder, der har med våbensalget at gøre. Det skriver Washington Post. Bruce Lemkin fra USA's luftvåben mener ifølge Canadian Press at kineserne overreagerer.
Kineserne er også irriterede over, at USA's præsident Barack Obama tilsyneladende har tænkt sig at mødes med Dalai Lama. I Beijing anser man nemlig den tibetanske eksilleder for at være separatist. Et højtstående medlem af Kommunistpartiet i Kina har ifølge CNN udtalt, at Kina vil sørge for, at ”de pågældende lande vil indse deres fejltagelser.”
