Den 12. januar proklamerede Google, at virksomheden vil tage sine aktiviteter i Kina op til fornyet overvejelse. Den amerikanske internetgigant overvejer nu at trække sig ud af Kina, som er det land i verden, der har allerflest internetbrugere. Google begrunder udmeldingen med hensynet til ytringsfriheden og en række hackerangreb, som kan spores tilbage til Kina.

Googles juridiske chef David Drummond var den første, der luftede idéen om at trække sig ud af Kina. Det skete på firmaets officielle blog. Drummond nævnte blandt andet at en tredjepart rutinemæssigt har overvåget kinesiske menneskerettighedsforkæmperes Gmail-konti. Han skriver desuden, at virksomhedens top har besluttet ikke længere at filtrere søgeresultater fra Kina, selv om det kan betyde at Google må lukke den kinesiske del af biksen.

Kinas regering har ikke i sinde at give Google dispensation fra at følge den kinesiske lovgivning. Udenrigsministeriets talsmand Ma Zhaoxu pegede på, at det officielle Kina selv er offer for hackerangreb, fortæller CRI. Xinhua citerer en anden af regeringens talsmænd for at sige, at Kinas internet er åbent.

Tvisten mellem Kina og Google kan sprede sig og komme til at påvirke forholdet mellem Kina og USA generelt. Washington Post skriver, at uenighederne kommer i en tid, hvor USA ellers forsøger at få et tættere forhold til Kina. Sydney Morning Herald kan fortælle, at de mange hackerangreb har fået USA til at sende en officiel protest til Beijing.
